Fat transfer
Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or lipofilling, is a procedure where fat is taken from one part of your body (usually the abdomen or thighs) and injected into areas of the face to restore lost volume, enhance contours, and rejuvenate the appearance.
It is commonly used to:
Restore volume to the cheeks, temples, or under-eye area
Soften deep folds (e.g. nasolabial lines)
Improve skin quality over time due to the presence of regenerative cells in fat
Fat transfer is often performed alongside other procedures like facelift or blepharoplasty.
-
The procedure takes between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the number of areas being treated. It can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent and patient preference.
Most patients go home the same day.
Fat is gently harvested using liposuction, purified, and reinjected into the face through small cannulas.
-
Expect swelling, mild bruising, and tenderness in both the donor and recipient areas. Most swelling subsides within 2 to 3 weeks, although subtle changes may continue for several months. You may feel lumpiness or firmness under the skin, which typically softens over time.
Return to light activity or work is usually possible after 5 to 7 days. Avoid strenuous activity for 2 to 3 weeks. Makeup can usually be applied after a few days to cover any bruising.
-
As with any procedure, there are risks. These may include:
Bruising and swelling, especially in the face
Fat reabsorption, sometimes requiring repeat treatment
Lumpiness or uneven texture
Infection (rare)
Asymmetry or irregular contours
Over- or under-correction
Cysts or calcifications (rare in facial fat grafting)
Numbness or temporary sensitivity in the donor or recipient areas
Mr. Eccles will carefully assess whether this treatment is suitable for your goals and advise on alternatives if necessary.
-
Fat that survives the transfer becomes permanent, making the results long-lasting. Final volume is typically assessed around 3 to 6 months after the procedure.
The ageing process will continue, but the improved contour and skin quality can last years. A healthy lifestyle and stable weight can help preserve your results.
In either case, Mr. Eccles will explain what you can realistically expect and what treatment best suits your concerns and goals.
